Home UpMelaka

The Melaka Fort, River and—yes—mall.

The British inherited Malacca (now transliterated Melaka) from the Dutch, whose palace now bears this plaque.

Across the street from that Dutch fort, the Melaka River drifts lazily along.

The reflection and languidity are so picturesque that they hide the tumbledown state of affairs.

A good number of six-foot iguanas cruise through these waters in search of food. Their preference is chickens, live.

A few hundred yards from the fort and the river stands this mall, about as sharp a cultural juxtaposition as can be imagined. In the foreground, a TV crew was broadcasting live.
