Home UpKarakoram Highway

Pictures from the highway that connects Pakistan to China.

A sign more than 5,000 kilometers from Beijing and almost 2,000 from Karachi.

And you thought that highway engineers were humorless souls.

Much of the route south of Gilgit passes through very dry country.

Part of the barrenness is the result of logging, with crudely squared timbers torrented down to a point where they can be hoisted to trucks running along the highway.

Pre- and post-hoist.

Time to load up and head to Islamabad. Note the hoisting A-frame.

A roadside shop with weapons for every taste and budget.
