Home UpFriday in Managil

These pictures were all taken one Friday morning in 1985 in the western Gezira town of Managil: there was a market that day, and a colorful procession en route to the mosque.

With hoes like these the myriad ditches of the Gezira are opened and closed.

A woman boils tea and waits for customers.

Another woman cooks and serves lunch.

Shortly, a procession forms and heads to the mosque.

The village has no electricity, but batteries power this loudspeaker.

Why is he so happy? "Because he loves God so completely."

Ready to join the procession.

The men are about to enter the mosque. In some parts of the world an infidel might tag along. Not here.

Women and children wait outside, along with one infidel. The girl in the foreground said that she wanted to become a doctor.
