Home UpBukhara: Kosh Madrasas

Close to the Samani Tomb, two madrasas face each other and form a pair, or kosh.

Here they are: we see a bit of the Madari-Khan ("khan's mother") Madrasa on the left and a bit of the side of the Abdullah-Khan Madrasa on the right. Both were built by the same emir, Abdullah Khan. He built the one to his mother first, about 1567, and then about 1580 the one to himself.

Here's the Madari-Khan Madrasa.

Here's her son's.

The *banai *ornament in the *iwan *of Madari-Khan looks like something from the digital world.

Contrast it with the ornament of Abdullah's.
